Movie Review: Godzilla VS Mothra (1992)
Godzilla VS Mothra (1992) was the 2nd highest grossing film in Japan in 1993, trailing Jurassic Park.
I wanted to highlight how successful this film was in Japan to ground the argument that it is quality in a blunt fact. There is some ambivalence in the English speaking fan base about this movie because of its heavy approach to messages, but each of those messages gets turned upon in interesting ways. What may seem like a movie heavy with messages is really setting up something quite different. This film exudes beauty, and gives me feelings like Superman (1978). There are spoilers ahead, this film relies on many unexpected turns — its the expected turns that I think make people wonder about watching this film — but the unexpected turns make this a rich film filled with delight. This is a really good movie and I highly recommend seeing it. If you read this review a lot of the twists this movie relies on for emotions on first viewing may be diminished for you.
This movie is filled with deceptions regarding character motivations. These deceptions pan out richly, but there are times when you wonder why you’re supposed to like some characters up until they get their reveals. If you’ve only caught a small bit of this film, you will have very different perceptions of it due to the way the film disguises motivations.
